Our story
Ballarat Brewing Academy started as a weekend hobby in a backyard shed, where a few friends argued about mash temperatures and yeast health over bottles of half-finished amber ale. That shed became a classroom, and the arguments became lessons. Today we teach the full craft of brewing — from malt selection and hop schedules to bottling and carbonation — to homebrewers who want more than a recipe to follow.
We are not a factory and we are not a sales channel. We are a community of people who believe that good beer is made slowly, with clean equipment, honest ingredients, and patience. Our courses are built around the questions we actually hear in the brewhouse: why does my fermentation stall, what does a crystal malt really add, how do I balance a bitter finish without hiding the malt.
The tone we keep is direct and practical. We talk about diacetyl, hop creep, and water chemistry the same way we talk about bottling day — with curiosity and no pretension. Whether you are brewing your first pale ale or refining a recurring lager recipe, you will find a place here that takes the craft seriously without taking itself too seriously.

Why we brew
Ballarat Brewing Academy started with a simple observation: most homebrewers learn by trial and error, repeating the same mistakes batch after batch. We wanted a place where the science behind the pint is explained clearly, without losing the warmth of a shared table.
Our courses and articles walk through the full journey — from selecting base malts and weighing hops to controlling fermentation temperature and conditioning bottles. We believe a well-made amber ale is a quiet act of skill, and our job is to give you the vocabulary and technique to make it yours.
Malt, hops, water, and yeast each carry character. We teach you to taste them separately before blending, so your recipes are deliberate rather than accidental.
